Children & Education

Compulsory education under Dutch law applies to children of all nationalities from 5 to 18 years of age who are residing in the Netherlands. All the information here is related to this group of children and aims to provide you with information to help you make an informed decision regarding your child’s education while living in The Hague.

Choosing a school

It is estimated that there are around 6,000 children living in The Hague region whose parents work in international organisations, such as the United Nations, the European Union and NATO, or for multinational companies like Shell.

International schools can be a good option for your child if you plan to stay temporarily in the Netherlands or if you wish your child to start or continue their international education. If your child has already been to school for several years and is comfortable with lessons in English, an international school might be more suitable. Teenagers might also appreciate the educational and social continuity provided by an international school.

Some parents (usually with younger children) opt for the Dutch local schools to give their child the opportunity to integrate in the local community and perhaps learn a new language.  By immersing themselves in the Dutch language, they will connect to their new environment more easily.

Please be aware that it is important to register your child as soon as possible at the school of your choice. You can register a child from the age of 3 and depending on your preferred school at even a younger age.

Places at international schools are often very tight and while the schools do their utmost to accommodate Shell children, it is not always possible to place children at the school of the parents’ choice, especially at short notice.

Places for children with special educational needs and for children whose first or second language is not English are limited. Parents should apply directly to at least one school as early as possible (applications can always be withdrawn if necessary), but keep in mind that applying often involves a nonrefundable fee.
